Born in the autumn of 1870 at the back of 7 Smith Street, Aston the daughter of Thomas Instone, a policeman, and Emma Hales, she lived with her 7 older siblings, Thomas, Elizabeth, Emma A, Alice M, Alfred, Emily and Clara. By 1881 the family had moved to 154 Cooksey Rd Small Heath where, when she was 11, her sister Emily died in November 1881 aged 15 from TB.

She married 'the boy next door' who she had lived a few houses away from since she was 7 (by 1891 they were actually next door neighbours). They married in Kings Norton in 1894 and lived with Thomas for a while until moving to Wolverhampton where by 1909 they were at 61, Sherwood Street. She and John had a son John Lesley and they remained close for their whole lives both Clara and John and her son and his family living in the same street; when her sister Clara died in 1948 John was the informant and his address was 11, Sherwood Street.

Rosa's son John Lesley worked on the goods trains at Snow Hill Station and married Yvonne Cornez and had twin boys Ronald J and Gerald. Tredwell family
