Joan was born in 1904 the second daughter of Thomas Margrett and Edith Seymour in Kings Norton, Worcestershire and lived at Clarence Road, Mosley. She married Charles Howard Kenneth Tye on 15 June 1935. Before her marriage she sang on the radio, accompanied by her sister Barbara, as the 'Margrett Sisters and received fan mail.

Joan and Ken started thier married life at Cowthorpe Old Rectory in York and had a daughter Alison born 11 February 1939, shortly after they moved to 'The White House' Alne where Joan got pregnant again; towards the end of the pregnancy she was rushed into Purey Cust Nursing Home, York with placenta previa causing her to have an emergency caesarian section and her daughter Jennifer was born premature on 11 September 1942 and sadly, lived for only 18 hours.

When the Tyes moved from The White House Ken's parents took over residence whilst Joan and Ken moved next door to Rose Villa followed by the Dunnington Hall Estate which Joanie loved. She spent most of her married life supporting her husband Ken in his business 'Tye Trailers'.

When Ken died the death duties were so huge that she had to sell Dunnington and moved into 'Ghyll House', Lilling, Sheriff Hutton, York.
