Born in 1854 at Ropley Hampshire the daughter of Cornelius John Hickman (a servant) and Dorcus Shadwell (also a servant). In 1861 she and her mother were living with her grandmother Ann and her uncles. By 1871 she had moved to Clarence Street Gloucester where she was working as a dressmaker. She married Frederick Clitherow Margrett in 1873, witnesses at the wedding were George Bishop Dale (a carpenter and Timber merchant) and Ellen Dale from Regents Place Cheltenham which was unusual as normally a parent would act as witness; at the time of the marriage they were both living at 1 Regents Terrace St George Street, Cheltenham. He was described as a clerk at the time of both his wedding and the birth of his first son (who appeared just under 8 months later!) although the census returns put him as an apprentice marble maker. Emma died at home at 29 Braithwaite Road, Aston, on 27 February 1887 aged only 33 from inflamation of the brain (encephalitis) leaving behind 5 children under 12, the youngest Ralph being under 18 months old.
