Born in 1869 in Aston, Birmingham the daughter of Thomas Instone, a policeman, and Emma Hales, she lived with his 4 older siblings, Thomas Elizabeth, Emma A and Alice M and her younger siblings Alfred, Emily and Rosa. They had moved to the back of 7 Smith Street, Aston by 1871 and to 154 Cooksey Rd Small Heath where Emily died in November 1881 aged 15 from TB.

She was a house keeper for various well off families and at 22 was woking for Dr Harrison, a surgeon, at 91 Lichfield St, Tamworth with her sister Alice woking as a parlour maid opposite but one at number 94 also working for a doctor, a Dr John Joy. She never married and died aged 79 at 1, Western Road (Dudley Hospital) from Cardio Vascular Degereration and Senility. In 1948 her address was 133 Station Road Birmingham the death was registered by her sister Rosa's son who was living at 11 Sherwood Street, Wolverhampton.
